The first ever USAGF Drum Circle took place on September 10,2012 and it was a huge success. There were several karateka in attendance from the Fox Dojo including Sensei Schopp and all together there were 45 drummers at the main dojo drumming, communicating, and expressing themselves. Master Kelljchian enjoyed it so much that he asked for it to occur every year.
At first we just drummed and then after about half and hour of playing together karateka were invited to the center of the circle to perform a kata of their choice to the accompaniment of the drumming. Master Schopp, Sherry Proctor, Miguel Arasa and Carlos Brignon all did kata in the circle and then Eldon Taylor and Carlos sparred while the drumming grew to a feverish pitch.
Kata is said to be motion with emotion and the same can be said for all aspects of Karate. With the drumming accenting our movement we become more aware of the elements involved in our motion.
